A class for those that wish to add stenciling to their repertoire of finishes and want a good foundation on which to develop their skills. A mixture of lecture, demo and practical work. Learn free form, multi layer and overall patterns. Learn simple measuring tips and fabric techniques. The instruction is an ideal companion class to the “Double Vision” presentation. Students will learn how to layout a design and the steps to paint a realistic/three dimensional molding that can be adapted to many other decorative projects. Students will learn approaches and techniques to produce a trompe l’oeil painting of a Winged Lion typically found over a doorway. The paint supplied by the instructor is Benjamin Moore – MoorLife Flat Finish 100% Acrylic Paint. The project will be painted on pre-primed Tara sign cloth. The size of the canvas is 24″ x 36″ Students will be able to roll up the canvas when completed to place in a mailing tube supplied by the instructor.

This class will teach you two each of my best selling molding, counter top and cabinet techniques. I will demonstrate a wide variety of processes on these surfaces such as crackling, distressing, embossing, foiling, polychrome glazing, pearlizing, and fly specking. Many different products will be used to create these classic designs. A unique part of the class will be showing how to coordinate fabrics and the surrounding decor to create a cohesive design look with all three surfaces we will be teaching. This allows you to learn how these finishes can help complete the design aesthetics for a space.

In this workshop you will learn how to make realistic faux birch wood using a fast technique. Today’s decorating trends include wood graining in colors beyond the traditional. The rest of the panel is a study of light, shadow and transparency creating volume through the illusion of old flaking paint including faux mouldings, a trompe l’oeil image of a book and a tempting glass of Beer which the viewer will try to grab!

Using tools designed in England you will learn the English style of woodgraining and marbling. This style of artform consists of using a limited amount of specialty brushes to design and develop incredible wood and marble replications. This style of woodgraining has been around since the 1300′s. There are only a handful of masters and freemen left that still practice this English style of artform. You will produce six 16″x20″completed sample boards of marbles and rare woods from around the world. You will also learn the art of “Disecting” current marbles and woods in order to replicate them.

Extensive lecture time will cover prep, estimating, marketing, products, spraying, toning, glazing, and much more. No other class can offer this much insight into cabinet and furniture finishing. There will be some spraying in class, dust masks will be provided. But if you’re very sensitive to smells please bring painters spray mask. This is for serious minded finishers. We will use acrylic lacquers in class.

Learn how to make a wide variety of high end finishes and decorative panels with a few basic products and a low material cost. An enduring and popular style in decor since the late 17th century, the flowering Chinoiserie garden mural is one of my favorites to paint. In this workshop we will learn a new way to paint in this historic style, using durable acrylic paints, stencils, and hand-finishing techniques. Students will practice on two 16″x20″ prepared panels, and may choose their own colors to personalize their work, whether it be bright and colorful or monochromatic. More advanced students may add the trompe l’oeil tear pictured in the sample. Note: no Chinoiserie will actually be harmed in this class.
