It’s difficult to imagine a more stunningly talented husband and wife team than Rome, Italy’s Walter Cipriani and Carolina d’Ayala Valva. Accomplished artists and sought-after instructors, Walter and Carolina recently shared their experiences through an interview. Carolina’s book Art et Techniques de la Grotesque sets a high standard for excellence and showcases the perfection of her work and her passion for sharing her knowledge with other artists.
Jeff Huckaby loves to paint grottesca style ornament. And, to his credit, he has successfully made this very specialized style of painting his specialty. An avid traveler, he and partner spend as much time in Europe as possible.
I had the honor of having Carolina and her husband Valter come to my studio in March of 2010. The purpose of their visit was to teach a class; not just any class, but Carolina’s first time teaching in the U.S. after her new book on Grottesca techniques had come out. We coupled her class with one from Pierre Finkelstein and spent the next six days in Middletwon, CT with 20 plus students. This was the first time I had met Carolina and Valter in person.
